Business, as a core economic institution, derives its meaning and function within the framework of formal institutions, particularly the constitution. The quality of legal and institutional structures plays a decisive role in the formation, legitimacy, and performance of economic activities. This study aims to explain the position and conceptual model of business in the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran and to identify its foundational components through an institutional approach. The research is applied in purpose and qualitative in method, employing a grounded theory strategy.
Data were collected through documentary analysis of the constitutional text and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. A total of 145 initial codes were extracted and subsequently consolidated into 45 secondary codes, which were organized into six main categories and several subcategories. The findings indicate that value-oriented business constitutes the core category of the extracted model. It is shaped by ideological causal conditions—such as human dignity, justice, rejection of domination, and the religious foundations of law—and is realized within a framework of rule-based governance and protection of property rights. This realization occurs through forms of enterprise that are socially oriented, competitive, law-abiding, and knowledge-based. Security, adjudication, and the provision of basic needs were identified as intervening factors influencing this process.
The outcomes associated with this model include the development of human, material, social, and spiritual capital, as well as broader goals of development, justice, and economic self-sufficiency. The principal contribution of this research is the presentation of a grounded, data-driven conceptual model of the position of business in the constitution, which can inform economic policy analysis, legal interpretation, and efforts to improve the institutional environment of business.
